EPISODE: A Podcast with Juliano Giannerini Juliano Giannerini, Director of Information and Systems Security at Baker Construction, explains how technology teams earn trust by thinking like business leaders. He explains why “invisible” work must be translated into outcomes such as margin improvement, uptime, and reliability. He shares real examples of optimization that returned dollars to business units and reduced operational friction at scale. He also shows how proactive and predictive planning replaces constant firefighting.

Full Episode “We needed to stop and think about the whole thing, not only our own network or infrastructure. We needed to see how everything was interconnected. We needed to stop the bleeding and create stability before we could optimize, because we were absolutely 100% reactive, firefighting every day. Our main goal is to be predictive. Being proactive means I am way ahead of events or things that might happen.”

(7:22) Turning Invisible IT Work Into Business Wins “In the construction industry, for people who live this every day, I cannot just talk about the cloud and cyber. I can talk about what we are doing in the background, our technology landscape, which is helping our organization keep things moving, enabling uptime, availability, reliability, and performance, and what the impact is for them precisely. It’s about turning the invisible work into visible but valuable.”

(3:27) Preventing IT Firefighting With Predictive Ops “We needed to stop the bleeding and create stability before we could optimize. So, we did cloud optimization. We did mobility optimization. The firefighting every day was reduced after we shifted all the internet service providers to an internet service aggregator.”

8 (2:52) Stopping Spot Solutions From Inflating Overhead “It's our job, from a technology perspective, to support the whole organization. That's why I always talk about having a holistic view of the organization. When you talk about different solutions, if one is based on an Oracle database, you need an Oracle DBA. I don't see Oracle DBAs supporting MS SQL quite often. You have different skillset profiles. So, you end up spending more in this whole context just because you're looking at a spot solution and missing the big picture.”

(1:31) Controlling Shadow IT and AI From Creating Unfixable Tools “Spot solutions are when you only look at your particular business unit and miss an opportunity for something that could be rolled out with capacity already in place. The shadow is what we don’t really know, and now, with the shadow AI, there’s a proliferation of tools and people who think they can do IT work just because they've learned prompt engineering. Both create a lot of MVPs, but they don’t create final products that are supportable, scalable, or have a life cycle. It ends up with IT to support with no documentation whatsoever when whoever developed that turns their back on the organization.”

(3:45) Making Efficiency A Survival Advantage In Construction “The power of the regulator will enable a lot of technology because you need to comply with requirements. If you’re not compliant, you cannot operate, and if you’re not in line with contract requirements, you don’t get that job. In construction, efficiency isn't optional. It's a survival because it's a low-margin business. I'm in an organization that really has long-term plans so, regardless of the low margin, we are growing and caring about people.”

11 (1:01) Building Better IT Outcomes Through Deep Listening “Listen to the business, listen to your peers, build relationships, and by doing that, you will understand the real problem. When you understand the real problem and you refine the problem statement, you fix the right problem. You can only understand that if you listen and you try to put yourself in their position and the way they see things.”
